This High Definition journey begins under flickering stars and candle-light; inside shanty homes that modestly shield the elements; around the faces of a large family from the benevolent Chugha tribe as they eat together in prayerful silence. The graceful gratitude serves a purpose: to bring the continued blessings of the God that looms above them in stones and darkness, a sacred Mountain with an ascent to an otherworldly landscape that has beat the hearts of this African tribe since Early Man.
The God is Kilimanjaro (in Swahili literally “Mountain of God”) – a 19,340 foot summit that rises between the borders of Tanzania & Kenya in Equatorial Africa that is most known for its natural miracle: Snow. Some see it as nature’s cycle. Other see it as a warning. Regardless of one’s position on global climate change, some facts are certain. Glaciers are melting, artic ice is diminishing, and the sacred snows atop this mountain set at Earth’s equator will be entirely gone in this lifetime.
This documentary is a time-capsule – a human drama about a visit to the top of Holy Mount Kilimanjaro – to taste the snow that will no longer be there when our children are old enough to climb it. These diminishing snow fields have inspired the hearts and minds of naturalists and artists around the World and their run-off has fed the springs that provide irrigation for crops at the base – completing a perfect circle of life that has sustained the culture and people of Chugha tribe forever.
Emmi, a strong, altruistic tribal leader who has established her own eco-travel outfit and funnels the funds to local education – and Denisi, our soft-spoken, mindful Chugha Guide, lead us on this final journey to capture the experience for future generations in its entirety. Along the way, we learn of stories of sacrifices on the mountain to bring rain, to practical uses of “Kili” as the locals call it (such as banishment for crimes to cleanse the soul of the wrongdoer… if he survives the trek). This first-hand account complete with unparalleled high definition visual imagery of the snowy landscape will make this film unforgettable for future generations that will never get to know what it was like to look upon the mountain and see it gleaming white.
More than a cultural record and a naturalist essay – this documentary is a soulful story filled with Hope – that perhaps in a time of progress we can look truthfully at what is happening to our World and what we can change about ourselves – revelations that can only come with a quiet final visit to the top, an ascent on Kilimanjaro to celebrate in its deep stillness – the visual beauty and dramatic splendor of this Mountain of God.
